Boquillas Canyon in all of it's majesty. New Years eve a few years ago, 3 friends of mine and I jammed into a tiny VW Jetta and bolted west to see a meteor shower on a new moon in Big Bend National Park. Big Bend is noted for being on of the darkest skies in the lower 48, and boasts the MacDonald Observatory, an amateur Astronomers dream. The night before the meteor shower, the group and I decided to hike into the canyon before sunset where we saw the canyon wall lit up by the setting sun and watched a local fisherman throwing his net into the river and throwing the load onto his donkey near by. The Rio Grande divides Big Bend and Mexico from one another, and from the Big Bend side you can see into Mexico. Not much, considering it is all desert, but it still makes for a beautiful sight and a great story.
