Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken on a warm summer sunset boat trip in the Beverly Harbor, located in Beverly, Massachusetts which is about 30 minutes north of Boston. The funny thing about this picture is that it was taken while I was out on a social outing with a few friends on a personal boat. When it came time to vie the sunset, I was absolutely blown away by the colors that were produced. We happen to be one of the only boats on the river at that time which created the peaceful scenery I was able to capture.

Time

This photo was taken at approximately 7:45pm during the warm summer sunset.

Lighting

I think the picture speaks for itself in regards to lighting. The reflections off the water is a once in a lifetime view because no two sunsets are ever the same.

Equipment

Surprisingly enough, this photo was taken on a Canon Powershot. I took this photo right after I graduated from High School, before my budget allowed me to really begin investing in my photography interests. I used no flash, tripod, or any other assist devices other than my own eyes.

Inspiration

My style of photography tends to be "In the Moment" which may not sound overly professional to some. I often find myself in any given place, and notice a few, or an angle that needs to be captured. I find these moments to be my inspiration because they are often so real, and so raw and I think that this photo is a prime example. When I agreed to go out on this boat with my friends for a relaxing evening on the water, getting the perfect shot was not top priority. I live my life trying to experience each and every moment to the fullest and with that, I always make it my priority to balance my time behind the lens with being present in the moment as I feel many in the younger generation are getting lost behind the screen.

Editing

I did very minimal post processing with this which mostly came down to my lack of experience.

In my camera bag

My current "go" back as I call it has the following: - Canon Rebel T2i with your standard 18-55mm lens - Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III - Canon EF 50mm - F/1.8 - Extra Battery - Tripod - Wireless Remote

Feedback

I think the biggest advice that I could give to someone who is trying to capture something similar, or trying to get into photography in general is to keep taking pictures and to play with your camera. You really need to learn the in's and out's of your camera that you own to really understand how it is going to perform in all different types of situations. Once you have a good understanding of your camera just start taking pictures, and keep taking pictures. The world is your model and around every corner there is a beautiful shot waiting to be captured. Don't be afraid to change your viewpoint, I can almost guarantee that people have witnessed me climbing trees, rocks or crawling through bushes and laying on the ground to approach a shot from all angles. I am not professionally trained and I am still have a lot to learn in my photography skills but at the end of the day, the most important thing any photographer can do is to have fun with it!
