Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image at Midwest Technical Institute in Springfield, Illinois. They hold an annual welding competition for the high schools in this area.I

Time

10:00 AM

Lighting

I tried several different type of lighting and using flash as a fill. I was not satisfied so I started using only the light from the welding. I found the best ambient light was when the welding stick was arcing behind an object like this pipe.

Equipment

Nikon D80, standard 18-135mm.

Inspiration

While I was watching the competition I like the arcing and the light given off by the weld. Had to try.

Editing

None

In my camera bag

Medium telephoto, macro, ND filters, remote release, Speed light.

Feedback

Take your time and experiment doing different angle. One I enjoyed is the reflection of the arc off the face of the welding mask. Have fun and shoot.
