Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It backs up against a wooded area and this rabbit and her family have taken up residence there for the past couple years.

Time

This was taken a bit before nautical twilight, where there was still some good light coming over the ocean.

Lighting

I've learned not to be afraid of upping the ISO. But with this photo I forgot I had dialed in 100 and my shutter speed went well below the focal length. By that time the rabbit was watching me and I didn't have time to dial in another iso, before she decided to hop off. I just shot and it still came out pretty good.

Equipment

Canon EOS Rebel SL1, with 55-250mm EF-S lens. No tripod , but I did lie down in the grass to be steady and not spook the bunny too much.

Inspiration

The rabbit was out in the open eating the clover flowers that had sprouted in the lawn. She really showed up against the green grass and let me get much closer than she normally would. I really liked the contrast of her fur against the green.

Editing

Cropping, sharpening and brought up the saturation some to make the rabbit pop against the grass.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon EOS SL1 with the 55-250mm attached or my Canon 5D mark II with my Tamron 28-300mm lens as an all around. I usually carry an EF-s 24mm for the SL1 and the EF-50mm for the full frame.

Feedback

I think we're fortunate that we live in a digital age and we can take a lot of shots and delete what didn't work out. I took a lot of shots of this rabbit as I crept closer to her and was able to process one within a reasonable range of her. I really don't like to disturb wildlife, so I really try to keep a good buffer zone between me and them. To me that's where the best pictures are, while they are comfortable in their own environment.
