Location
This photograph was taken in South Africa in Walkerville (a small farming community area) of the local mountain there called Perdekop, which is deeply steeped in the South African history. Originally this mountain was used in the Boer war as a lookout point by the Boers to see when the British soldiers were advancing. There are still a number of remains, on the mountain, of the early structures that were built there. This mountain is also home to a rare raptor that we have in South Africa called the Black eagle, and I have spotted the juveniles and adults on the mountain on numerous occasions.Time
The image was taken in the early morning as the sun was rising, if I remember correctly I went up the mountain that day at about 2am. This was taken well after that around 4-5 in the morning. But while I was waiting for the sun to rise I was able to capture some spectacular images of the nocturnal animals and insects that are to be found in the African bushveldLighting
I wanted to capture an image that oozed the feel of a South African bush landscape, the colors we have at sunrise are amazing. I wanted people to be able to look at the photograph and feel that they were standing in the middle of the bush with me. With sunrises I always find the earlier you are there the better.Equipment
Canon 650D with a 18-55mm lens. Hand held, no flashInspiration
I just love South African landscapes and while I was walking from one point which I had selected for a landscape to another point on the mountain where I was going to take further photographs, I saw the sun rise behind the tree and thought of what a spectacular shot it would make. I stopped and startred to take a few photographs. I suppose you can call it being in the right place at the right time.Editing
I dropped the exposure, added a little contrast, pushed the vibrancy and saturation up.In my camera bag
that depends on the day and what I will be taking. but for landscapes I have a Canon 650D or 5D in the camera bag with the 18-55mm lens, standard 50 mm lens and the 75-300mm kit lens. I also carry with me a 75-500mm zoom lens in case I come across wildlife. also a light weight tripod for the longer exposures.Feedback
