Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in March of 2015 @ J. Lorraine Ghost Town, a really cool family hangout spot w/ good, decently priced food, live entertainment, a fun maze to try to get out of, kid's movies on an outdoor screen, horseshoe & volleyball pits &, several Old Western style (Ghost Town) exhibits to make you feel like your living in the Old West, in Manor, Tx.

Time

This was a sunset shot on the restroom building. Other buildings here make really nice sunset shots as well.

Lighting

I initially thought that I had used only the sunset ambient light for this shot but the details on this picture says I used flash, compulsory, strobe return? My RAW file, which had more EXIF information, was edited on an older version of Lightroom on a hard drive that has died since I took this picture so, I can only see partial exposure information, sorry.

Equipment

I shot this photo with my entry level Nikon d3100 (f8: 1/200 sec.; ISO - 560; 32mm focal length (35mm focal length 48); max aperature 4.5; not sure of exact exposure time, possibly 4-8 seconds?) on a metal tripod I bought from GoodWill. I couldn't retrieve my lens information so, I must have used 1 of my older manual focus only lenses?

Inspiration

As I was taking shots @ J. Lorraine, I noticed the sun was peering through an opening by the bottom level of the Restroom building. I told myself I need to capture that shot before it is gone.

Editing

I process my shots in LightRoom. Once again, my RAW files are on a dead hard drive so I can't retrieve all of my adjustments that I made for this shot but, I tend to lean towards the slightly oversaturated look, usually bumping the contrast, turning down the highlights, tweaking the sharpness sometimes, bring out some of the shadows, basically an HDR, almost cartoonish look with a feeling of reality.

In my camera bag

I normally use my Nikon kit lenses, 1 - 55-200mm zoom &, 1 - 18-55mm wide angle zoom with my Nikon d3100. I sometimes will use my older manual focus only lenses, like I believe I probably used on this shot. I also usually carry my plug in shutter release for exposures longer than 30 seconds.

Feedback

I believe, my advice to catch a similar shot as this one would be to 1st find your subject matter that you would like to capture, check it out at various times of the day to see how the sun & other surrounding environmentals interact with it, usually dawn or dusk being the prime times, try shooting @ various angles with various settings, bring your tripod & set up your camera for some long exposures, make adjustments until you like it in the camera then, process it to your liking or your artistic personality &, most importantly, always have fun when you're shooting. With practice comes better results. Don't get too frustrated if you can't capture what you want when you want it. Practice, practice, practice!!!
