Behind The Lens

Location

This was captured in beautiful San Diego, CA.

Time

It was right around noon on a typical bright blue skied California day!

Lighting

I think for this particular shot, it was good that it was midday when the sun was shining the brightest. Being under the pier and being able to see that last bright window at the end is fantastic, as well as the shadows and external light.

Equipment

This one was actually captured with my Nokia Lumia 1020 phone! I specifically bought it because I knew it had the most advanced camera for a cell phone. I was just out casually enjoying a day at the beach, so I didn't bring my usual camera with me.

Inspiration

I was walking along the beach, and when I passed under the pier, I couldn't help but notice how magical it looked facing into the ocean. The way the layers of waves looked with the symmetry of the pier legs was perfect, leading my eye to the very last window of light at the end of the tunnel.

Editing

As you can see, I changed the image to a sepia/black and white tone. I also enhanced the contrast just a tad. I think this helped add to the effect of the setting quite a bit.

In my camera bag

I'm not really at the stage yet where I have a camera bag with a lot of equipment. I actually just recently bought my first dslr, and I only have one standard zoom lens for it at the moment. As I get better and keep learning more about photography, I will probably start to buy more equipment and carry it around with me. For now I just love the freedom of traveling light and having my camera around my shoulder ready to capture anything that grabs my attention.

Feedback

Keep your artistic eye awake, and always be open-minded to shooting something even if the weather, lighting, or setting is different to what you were expecting or striving for.
