I rescued this June Bug-June Beetle from my pup's wading pool. As a reward I was able to shoot the tiny dragon's portrait as he dried out, before he took flight again.

I was enthralled by what appeared as microscopic flashes of light on the bug's face when it seemed to be somehow consuming the miniscule ants scurrying beneath it on the branch I had used to rescue the insect. Upon closer inspection, I realized the flashes of light were reflections of the sun from highlights on the tops of his facial features as his mouth contorted and opened.

I was further excited to be able to see tiny teeth exposed appearing underneath his lip. He looked like a tiny dragon to me; so different than I ever imagined he might look. And I loved the shape of his antennae as well. Just all around cute, even if he does have sharp, pointy teeth and many legs.
