Location
The photo was taken in a farm nearby Cavalcante city, located in Goias, Brazil. The region is known to be part of the Chapada dos Veadeiros.Time
I shot it just after the lunch, maybe 15pm, when I went to a farm which has lots of waterfalls. The weather was changing very quickly, I had do climb up and down the mountain very fast because I saw a big storm coming. Unfortunately didn't have time to enjoy it, just shot it (pretty much run and gun style).Lighting
The light was backlight, coming from the end of the canyon. Since was overcast at time, it was very soft.Equipment
For this photo I didn't use fancy equipment, only a D7000 with a 18-55mm. I had a tripod with me but when I shot this photo it was already raining so I didn't had time to use it, just bumped the iso. I always try to be lightweight as possible.Inspiration
I went to Chapada dos Veadeiros to hike and photograph with some friends in a trail between Alto Paraiso and Cavalcante, but the weather and the grass didn't helped. So after a unsuccessfull hiking we went to Cavalcante to see where we would arrive and happened to be near the farm. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to explore more the location.Editing
This photo was a good example of the saying "If you don't like the colors, turn it bw". It was one of few photos that looked very good just after the conversion. I used a grad filter in the sky to bring some detail back and in the rocks to open the shadows a little. Not heavy post processing on this one.In my camera bag
I try to be lightweight. My bag of choice for this type of work is a Lowepro Toploader 50 AW, but I plan to upgrade to a 70 AW Pro II. Inside I put my D7000 with the 18-55mm (want to upgrade to a 18-140mm) and a 50mm 1.8. In the pockets I put my BW polarizer, a Hoya infrared filter and my colorchecker. My tripod is a Manfrotto 055cxpro4 with a three way head, but I want to change to a ball head.Feedback
The rule of thumb in landscape photography is to plan ahead and be patient. In this region there are many attractions so is good to plan which to visit, which not. Note that are some only available in the winter, others in the summer. If you want to shoot in some remote location is a good idea to be lightweight. It's also a good idea to check the best time to photograph the location, especially if is a hidden waterfall.
