Sounds like it did exactly as I hoped. Sorry you don't like it though. You don't have to be rude about it either. :)

well I think this image is great this guy underneath me is rude not every phototure is meant to aesthetically pleasing some of the greatest photographs ever taken were taken at perilous times (tienaman square, serajavo massacre,9/11) on a different note this is great She reminds me of "newt" from the alien movie.

Thanks! A friend made the bunny and I managed to convince the little model that it was a pokemon. lol. The rest of the images are phenomenal as well. This one just captured exactly what I was going for.

If your art isn't making people talk then what are you really accomplishing?

So sad to see a child being used to portray yet another horrific scene. Sorry, but I believe that children should never be the subject of horror. They will see enough sadness and gruesomeness in their lifetime that they should never be used in it intentionally.

Words from the now 5 year old themself: "Yes, children see sad and horrible things every day. Animals go instinct. Babies die from bombs. Police shoot people. These photos are about kids being strong, and tough, and smart. These photos are about life being beautiful."

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a warehouse basement in Tallahassee, Fl. The building is the home of the Tallahassee Music Guild and the name of the place is called The Junction at Monroe. This is where the J@M! The owner has always been a strong supporter of local artists in every genre and he allows me to use every area of his property. The dark industrial feel of the place compliments a lot of my work.

Time

I normally do not work with children, but when the concept is right, I have to say this child was the best I've ever worked with! However, children have their own sleep schedule. I had to keep my entire day open for that perfect time and opportunity of when she was ready to be in front of my camera. After a proper introduction to the creepy rabbit (we convinced her it was a new Poke'mon character) and feeding her pizza, she was ready to play with her new friend! All of the images are candid and I we managed to shoot for a whole hour! This was taken on an August morning around 10:30am.

Lighting

I like to use as much natural lighting when I have that perfect location. I really think about the concept and what mood I want to portray. I was very limited to lighting in the basement area and children aren't exactly thrilled to be getting their picture taken in a dark basement with a weird smell. The dim light was simply cast by a fluorescent bulb that took forever for me to find with my cell phone flashlight app. It was the perfect touch for the abandoned macabre feeling I was going for.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000 using an 18-55mm lens. With the iSO set high and the aperture so low, I was able to get every detail in this photo and still capture the essence I was hoping to achieve. I did not need a flash and children are too impatient for tripods. There were parents though!

Inspiration

The inspiration is obviously the bunny! It was created by an artist who specializes in making cute adorable stuffed animals into infected mouth gaping nightmares (Germ Spider Designs). The model belongs to a wonderful couple who also supports and creates some amazing and beautiful art (Mandem) so she was born a natural. She is only 4!

Editing

As I stated in another response, I prefer to use natural lighting in every situation. This allows me to minimize the amount of editing and post processing to keep the genuine quality of the image I am trying to portray. This particular shot from the shoot did not require any special post processing other than darkening and clarifying selective areas.

In my camera bag

I try to carry as little as possible when I'm shooting for a questionable amount of time. I carry my Nikon D7000 around my neck and I have 3 different types of lens that I bring for pretty much any situation. I keep an external flash at hand for those rare moments that I can't acquire natural lighting.

Feedback

Children are unpredictable. It is best to put them in a situation that allows them to act on their own, or at least make them think they are in charge. This entire shoot was shot candid and this 4 year old managed to be the PERFECT asset for this concept. Finding that perfect location makes a huge difference too. Support local businesses!
