Location
This photo was taken outside of Davenport, Iowa, my hometown. We drove in search of some symmetrical soybean fields and stumbled upon this particular spot.Time
Since this was in the late summer of August, the photo was taken at sunset which was around 7:30 PM. However, we had been there for about two hours before, attempting to shoot in golden hour as well as the peak sunset.Lighting
Regarding lighting we simply lit our subject, Everett Louton, with an Alien bee on the right at a dimmer setting and paired it with a speed light on the left side.Equipment
Fo this photograph I was shooting on a Canon 7D with a 17-40mm L lens attached. On top of that I was using an Alien Bee studio strobe as well as a speed light.Inspiration
This was shot on the tail end of a promotional shoot for the guy in the photo. We're both from Iowa so we wanted to create a photographed that simply slid into the stereotype of typical Iowa.Editing
For post processing, I merged two images at different exposures from the same shoot. One shot had the land lit perfectly and the second was exposed for the sunset. I simply layered them in photoshop and ran them separately through lightroom to adjust coloring and tone it correctly to me style.In my camera bag
As of now, I typically have my 5D Mark III, 24-70L F/4, 17-40L F/4, and a 70-200 F/2.8. I don't typically shoot with flashes anymore since my work requires a more run and gun documentary style. I also cannot add any more weight since I'm typically skiing, backpacking, or climbing with gear.Feedback
In all honesty, just be creative. I know how cliche that is and it's said on basically every other photography article but it's true. You should never aim to be somebody else or do what they did. Maybe take it with your own style, but don't copy. Just be creative.
