Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my apartment. I'm self-taught as a photographer and this a session where I was testing out some techniques. So I asked a model I knew if she would come over for some test shots where she could do any look she wanted.

Time

This was in the afternoon on a weekend when both the model and I had some free time. The total time for the shoot was 2 hours.

Lighting

Very simple and basic. a 22inch beauty dish in front and slightly above the model and a strobe on a white paper background. I wanted the look to be crisp, high key, and high contrast. The light on the model is set to give me a proper exposure for f8.0 at 1/200th and 160iso. The light on the background is set for 2 stops higher so it blows out to white.

Equipment

The camera is a Canon 5d Mark 2. the lens is one of my favorites the EF85mm f/1.2L II. The 2 strobes are Alien Bees B800.

Inspiration

No real inspiration on this shoot. Sometimes the best shots are when you're just doing a relaxing test shoot and you let the model have fun with it.

Editing

A little frequency separation to clean up the skin a bit. Every speck shows with the b&w and this lighting. Then the neer black and white toning and making the background totally white. A single strobe on the background always leaves shadows in the corners. As long as you make sure it's fully white behind the model it's easy to clean up the corners.

In my camera bag

Fairly basic. My 5D Mark 2, my 85mm f/1.2, an 50mm f/1.4, and a 100mm f/2.8. This is if I'm shooting portraits. If I'm out and about I usually just take my 24-70mm f/2.8.

Feedback

The most important element to this photo is the model. The lighting is nothing fancy, The camera isn't that high end anymore. The lens is pricy but this can be taken with a much cheaper lens. If you want interesting photos go find interesting people.
