Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken in the UK, in the Lake District to be precise. I was on holiday and found out last minute about a bird of prey sanctuary putting on a show in the area, so pretty much headed there immediately.

Time

Thanks to time caps on photo's, I can say this was taken at exactly 10:01:42 AM on the 30th July 2015! From what I remember, it was one of the first things I saw when arriving. They had all of the birds out in the open on their perches so you could see them clearly.

Lighting

Nothing really to be honest. It was out in the open with no additional lighting. It was a nice, clear and sunny day so the natural light was pretty much perfect.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3100, with a 50-300mm lens. Nothing else was used.

Inspiration

On arriving, it was one of the first birds I saw, but after watching it for a time, it barely moved it just stood there. It's eyes flicking around keeping track of everything going on. It struck me as appearing very regal and as the perfect stationary model, I couldn't resist!

Editing

Nothing major, just very basic editing. I think all I did was tweak the exposure and contrast a very slight amount as the white feathers where reflecting starkly losing a bit of detail in the feathers.

In my camera bag

I still only have a D3100. Haven't been able to justify the costs of an upgrade and it still performs perfectly for what I need, so I've stuck with it for years now! I typically have my 50-300mm and 18-55mm lenses, lens wipes cleaning fluid and a micro-fibre cloth and a selection of filters. I keep things pretty minimal to be completely honest.

Feedback

Spend less time trying to set up the 'perfect' shot and more time simply going and getting photo's. Some of my most loved photo's, by both myself and others, were ones taken with literally no preparation, just grab the camera and go. I think it adds a certain level of realism that people can relate to more.
