Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken at Harwood house in Yorkshire UK at a hillclimb event where various viechles of different types compete against each othe on a time trail basis.

Time

It was a beautiful summers day 1st August 2015 and this image was taken mid event at approximatly 12.30

Lighting

Basicly it was clear summers day with a few fluffy clouds in the sky and until about 3.00 there was no sighn of rain

Equipment

The shot was taken Handheld with a canon eos 5 mk2 with a canon 100-400mm f4.5 - f5.6 L is usm lens mk1 being hand held i shot at F5.6 1/2500th iso320 at a focal lenght of 320mm as these cars are taking the corner at fairly high speed. The Canon is capable of taking Camera raw images at 22mb centerweighted average metering

Inspiration

It was the 1st time i had been to a hillclimb event or indeed any motor racing event since i was a child and im now 57 i was offered a ticket from a friend for 2 people and decided to take my wife (after asking her if she would like to go and some persuasion). it approxamitly 50-60miles away from my home and she had to work that evening so we could only stay about 3hrs maximum which suited her welll as she didnt know if she might enjoy it! it was completly different from what she or i expected. she really took the sport on board as from where we were sat we could see the whole course.

Editing

I use photoshop cc and dispite using a long lens still need to crop quite a bit of the image in order to make the photo appear larger in the frame than it actualy was. i always preprocess the image in adobe camera raw before entering photoshop proper. then it was just adjustments to the curves levels and saturation I also added some more light to give the appearrence of it comming out of a ray of sunlight then dodged and burned the background a little i always save the image in jpeg and psd in case i need or want to return to it

In my camera bag

sigma 10-20mm canon 70-200 L f4 canon 100-300 canon 100-400 L

Feedback

Try to get as close to the action as possible i was proberbly 100-150yrds from the curve concentrate on just that area rather than moving (after an initial look around decided where the best place to be is) if you can get a spot that looks down on the track rather than level so tou can shoot over any safety barriers etc choose your spot and angle of view after a few trial shots and then wait for the right moment to press the shutter. i took approximatly 50 shots that day of approximatly 20 different cars try to take cars that look good on the track. there were aproximatly 40 types of car at the event some "racing modified" road cars some moter/racing/track specific models as it is a semi proffessional event!
