Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in an old train station Tour & Taxis just outside downtown Brussels. The model is a friend of min, Anais, and this was our first shoot together.

Time

We met for brunch at a bar close by and then started our shoot around noon. This photo was around 2pm, when she had just put on a pretty black dress.

Lighting

Photo was done with natural light only. There are windows on all sides that make for a big softbox effect, and of course nice bokeh.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mk3 with a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens. No tripod, no flash. We were just moving around trying to use the converging perspective lines in this huge building.

Inspiration

Anais has great long hair and I wanted to play with that. She was turning around and I captured the hair moving. This photo came out nice because of the hair partially covering the face.

Editing

I only use Lightroom, no Photoshop. I worked on the exposure and colour palette, and made her skin somewhat more even, that's it.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 5D Mk2 and Mk3, with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. I mostly work with natural light, but just in case, I might take a Canon Speedlite 580ex II.

Feedback

I keep the mood light during a shoot, so that we both feel relaxed and comfortable with each other. A shoot were we laugh a lot, is a good shoot for me. It makes the photos and the memories better.
