Behind The Lens

Location

Red Dress Manor: Throughout Shropshire there are many abandoned and hidden houses filled with secrets and treasures. This particular house had a rather eerie feel to it. Maybe it was the many treasures and objects left behind such as an old singer sewing machine or the more famously known "red dress" which was left delicately draped across the wardrobe door. The crisp and ruffled pattern of the bedding, left untouched, and the sumptuous curve of the curtain made the room feel rather light and heavenly.

Time

This photograph was taken during the early hours of the evening, with just enough light to flood through the broken window.

Lighting

The time of day when a photograph is taken is one of the most important details. Around 4pm works best for me as the sun has already had its "prime time" in the sky leaving very little chance of glare.

Equipment

I used my Canon 100D with a 50mm prime lens

Inspiration

I took this photograph as part of my photography project titled "Amnesia" where I solely focused on forgotten and abandoned buildings. I felt most comfortable and most drawn to buildings which still felt like it had a human presence.

Editing

One of my favorite editing processes is on "Lightroom" where I increase the clarity and contrast. For me it worked particularly well for this image as the delicate creases of the bedding where significantly enhanced helping to draw the viewers eyes to my favorite feature.

In my camera bag

When heading out on a photographic quest I always bring me entire collection. Starting with my Canon 100D, 50mm prime lens, 10-18mm wide angle, 18-55mm and my 75-300mm zoom lens. My tripod is a must as I never know what time of day I will be shooting until. I tend to bring my SIGMA EF-610 DGST flash, although I haven't needed to use it recently.

Feedback

The only advice I can give is to be brave. Abandoned buildings can be rather intimidating so try to bring a second shooter or friend for comfort. But, Never break and enter. As a photographer you must respect the law and my own personal rule is to never move the objects and possessions. Make sure you respect the property as it was once someone treasured palace.
