Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a relative's house, this particular relative is a gardening enthusiast and has many flowers and plants, all of which were waiting to have their photo taken, and this bowl of beautiful autumn coloured flowers were a part of this array of nature's models.

Time

I was wandering around the garden and house of my relative, taking any opportunity for photographs of the amazing flowers. I simply walked into the kitchen and saw these beautiful flowers. I nestled my camera as close an carefully as I could against these delicate flowers and took the photo. I took this photo on the 15th of July 2015 at 18:00.

Lighting

This photo was taken in the late afternoon, when the light was rich in colour which helped make the flowers glow rather than be blinded by the the midday sun. As the bowl of flowers were sitting by a window, the sun was shining on them at an angle which created a lovely range of shadows and shades.

Equipment

I had been borrowing my relative's camera, which was a canon. I used no extra equipment.

Inspiration

It was a beautiful summer's afternoon, and I decided to grasp the opportunity of catching the garden in the slowly fading sunlight. So I asked to borrow my relative's camera and off I went, taking way too many pictures of this flower and the next, until I eventually ran out of flowers outside in the garden. I went inside the house and found these flowers in the kitchen, and they glowed in the sunlight, I couldn't resist.

Editing

I didn't do any post-processing, as I felt the photo was good as it was.

In my camera bag

For this particular photo, I was borrowing my relative's camera. Usually, however, I always carry my Canon Eos Digital Rebel XT with an EFS 18-55mm lens. I also have a polaroid UV filter which I almost always have on my camera to protect the main lens. In my bag, I always carry extra memory cards and an extra battery as my camera cannot hold as much memory as it is an older generation, although it is still my trusty camera. Along with the UV filter, I also carry some others: a CPL filter, a pouch of macro filters (+1, +2, +4, ×10), and I sometimes carry a starburst filter depending on the photograph I'm aiming to take. I also have a small travel tripod for if I need or want to take any time exposures, or just need to balance the camera.

Feedback

For any of those who wish to try to capture a similar photo, I recommend that every time you find yourself with a camera on a sunny summer's afternoon, find yourself a macro lens or filter and run around trying out different angles and distances from a variety of plants and objects and I'm sure you'll find that at least of your photos will come out as masterpieces.
