Location
This photo was taken just east of Tilden, Nebraska along highway 275. This is probably the best storm structure I've witnessed personally.Time
This photo was taken around 6:45pm on July 17, 2015. I monitored the weather throughout the day while I was at work and headed out to this developing storm as soon as I got off work.Lighting
Since it was the middle of the summer, there was still plenty of light at the time to show the beautiful storm structure. There was an orange glow underneath the meso on the western horizon.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D3100, 18-55mm lens, handheld at 22mm and 400 ISO. I did not use a flash on the photo but had the f/stop at 9 and exposure and 1/100sec.Inspiration
I enjoy doing some amateur storm chasing, but it is mostly limited to local storms. I've enjoyed photography for the last 5+ years but have recently been taking it more seriously.Editing
I used Lightroom 3 to post process the picture to correct the exposure and saturation, as well as enhance the contrast and clarity. In my camera bag
Right now I am currently using a Nikon D5500 with the kit 18-55mm lens, along with a Nikkor 55-200mm zoom lens. I also have a Nikkor 55-300mm zoom lens. I keep my Nikon D3100 in my bag as well for a backup.Feedback
For those wanting to capture stormscapes, I highly recommend taking a storm spotter class and learn more about storms in general. You want to be safe first and foremost and not put yourself in a dangerous situation with an income storm or tornado. Secondly, I recommend going out and shooting anything and everything and practicing your processing style. Photography is truly something that you will continue to get better at with practice. You will find your style and it will evolve as time and experience moves on.
