Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Normanby Hall, a grand house near my in-law's home. I took my new camera out for a play and caught this shot as I stood watching the bees gather round the flowers.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon, with the sun quite high and likely at my back.

Lighting

Photography is a hobby I am still relatively new. I look to manage the basics as best I can, but I'm still very much taking photos as and when I can, rather than finding specific times of the day to shoot at.

Equipment

I have a Canon 650D. In terms of equipment, I'm still a basic photographer that points and shoots subjects.

Inspiration

I was on the look out for something colourful and vibrant that would make a good shot; something that reminds me of the kind of images you see used as desktop backgrounds. I love the way this image fills the frame and offers a solid colour, with a splash of something extra to make it interesting.

Editing

I cropped the photo to help fill the frame, but otherwise the post production side of things is a mystery to me which I would very much like to unravel one day!

In my camera bag

I have a telephoto lens and a lens hood, but that's about it. I own a tripod, but I find that I tend to leave it behind when I take my camera out. I'm looking to grab spontaneous shots and use whatever is around me at the time to help stabilise the camera if needed.

Feedback

Keep your camera handy and don't be afraid to shoot whenever and whatever you can. Get in close and try to grab the detail. Be ready to shoot at any moment as it's amazing how quickly a situation changes and you find yourself wishing you had grabbed a shot that you've just missed! Don't hesitate!
