Location
The photo was taken in the North of Amsterdam, a place called NDSM-werf. Where ships and boats used to come in. It is a well known place for photographers living and working in Amsterdam that there are perfect photography spots for the public.Time
The day started out having fun with the model (who is by the way, a dear friend of mine, though this was our first-time shooting). This social girl can make even the cloudiest of days beautiful with her sunny disposition. At times the light would break into the clouds but I believe the blanket of clouds was that what made the light soft and glowing a bit.Lighting
We have used a cloudy weather, and slightly windy. The wind makes the photo a bit dynamic. Her hair was long and it gives off a dramatic effect. The light was well balanced.Equipment
Camera Canon EOS 600D and a Sigma 35mm 1.4. No flash, tripod, just natural light.Inspiration
The photo was inspired by a short story I wrote about a girl that was "rabbit-hearted" and she turns into a girl that "lion-hearted" meaning she turned from a scared prey to a brave predator. At heart, you can say I am a bit of a feminist and most pictures show fragile girls, and how much I appreciate that as art, I liked to see more strength.Editing
Photoshop, I made my own style based on the actions I made throughout the years. I love playing with digital film colours, to give pictures a slight nostalgic feeling, but I try to keep it as natural as possible. In my camera bag
The first thing I pack currently is my Canon EOS 5D mark iii. Then I often have my Canon 50mm 1.8 and my screenreflector with me. I pack light.Feedback
Find the right spots before you plan a shooting. The weather in the Netherlands is unpredictable there are no guarantees to come across the same weather but clouds make a nice natural soft box.
