Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo whilst attending a Workshop Photo adventure with Trey Ratcliff April 2015 in Queenstown, New Zealand. We traveled 50km to Glenorchy along the shore line of beautiful Lake Wakatipu to our early morning location, the amazing Glenorchy Boardwalk around Glenorchy Lagoon which is just a stones throw from the centre of the town on the Glenorchy-Paradise Road,

Time

We arrive before sunrise which should have been around 7.30 but we were to be denied any glimpse of one that morning! I continued to take shots and this one was taken at 8.42

Lighting

The morning was overcast with heavy cloud shrouding the nearby mountains shattering our chances of capturing a stunning sunrise! I found the light in New Zealand very different from Uk and Europe. The air is so clean and the light so cold giving my photos at totally new look.

Equipment

I used a Sony a6000 with Sony 10-8mm F4 OSS lens. I always use a tripod when going to shoot landscape and use the lightweight Giottos Vitruvian VGRN925 Aluminium Tripod, it's perfect for my compact system camera. Another little gadget I always use is a remote trigger.

Inspiration

I got into photography in 2013 when researching a holiday to New Zealand and came across photographs by Trey Ratcliff and knew that if I wanted to be able to capture the magic of my holiday in photographs I would have to learn how to take them like him, I followed all his tutorials and his style of HDR and started to enjoy post processing almost as much as taking them! I got so interested in landscape photography that I incorporated one of his workshops into that holiday. Glenorchy Boardwalk is an inspiring place and as it was autumn the colours were just amazing!

Editing

The vast majority of my shot are bracketed; 3-5 images gives me the option to use HDR which is my favourite post-processing method. I use Adobe Lightroom as my library and post-processing and at the time I took this photo I was using Photomatix Pro 5 HDR to combine and then back to Lr for final adjustments. I sometimes edited my photos in Photoshop where I can use layers if I feel the image can be improved but not this one. I like my landscape photos clear of distractions eg, litter, people etc. so I would use Snapheal CK removal, luckily this photo had none of them, which just goes to show what a beautiful peaceful place it was.

In my camera bag

As a mature lady I don't want to carry around a heavy camera bag so I like to travel light and I chose my lenses very carefully when setting out on a landscape shoot. My camera bag is a Lowepro Flipside 200 backpack. My sony camera (very small and lightweight) normally no more than 3 lenses covering 10mm -200mm. Other items include; Extra batteries, Spare SD cards, Remote Shutter Control, lens cleaning kit, phone, money, plasters, pen/paper, bag rain cover, bar of chocolate, small drink bottle. I don't carry a spare camera! and I hope I never have to regret that!

Feedback

New Zealand is a photographers paradise, I traveled from the far north of the North Island to the Lakes in the South Island and there were photography opportunities everywhere, the air is so clean that haze was never a problem, the golden hours were spectacular with the most amazing cloud formations I have ever seen. If I ever get the chance to spend time in New Zealand again I would give myself time to not only find and capture these wonderful places but to enjoy just being there in the moment, having time to wait for different light, changing skies. Travel with a like minded buddy that enjoys the same things.Get up early and stay out late. But above all just get out and do it.
