Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at The McGovern Centennial Gardens and the Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion, a new area with Hermann Park in Houston, TX. This was the first time exploring this beautiful location.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon on a summer morning. Like most summer days it was hot, though there was a slight breeze to offer a bit of comfort from the unrelenting heat.

Lighting

I wanted this image to mirror the bright, sunny feel from the flowers and worked hard to get an image that had no obstruction. I wanted to sun to shine in the bright, brilliant white of the pedals.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon L320, no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

This was the first trip the new garden and I wanted to capture that cheery, happy feeling. I wanted the emotions and feelings from the experience to shine through the lens.

Editing

There was no additional editing or post-processing done for this image.

In my camera bag

Nikon L320 is normally the only thing that I take with me, though at times, I have my laptop over my shoulder. I try to find the best angle and position to get the best image and sometimes the screen on the camera just isn't quite big enough and you need to see it on a larger screen to make sure you have just the right shot you were hoping to capture.

Feedback

I would say the best advice I could give is to have a passion, drive and patience. When it comes to landscape and stationary objects, it is sometimes easy to be overly confident and feel like it is simple to take a breathtaking photo. I would disagree with that thought process though. Sometimes the most difficult yet brilliant images are the ones that appear through the lens as being simple. I think that if you can make a photo appear effortless then that is the kind of image you want captured and placed in your portfolio. Trust your eye.
