Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while hiking near my house. I wanted to do some silhouette photography and I found a perfect place on top of a pile of dirt and rocks.

Time

This photo was taken right after sunset when the clouds started to burst into their colors. I remember waiting quite a while for the sun to set in order to get the vivid colors in the background of my silhouette shot.

Lighting

I composed this shot so that the brighter and more vivid parts of the clouds were right behind and around my composition of the bike.

Equipment

I used a fujifilm finepix hs35exr bridge camera.

Inspiration

The inspiration of this photo came to me when I was looking back at my photography from years passed. I noticed that most of my photos were of different objects combined into one photo and I wanted to just focus on one object instead of many. I also noticed that I had NO photographs with silhouettes! I had to take a silhouette photo then.

Editing

Basically all I did to this photo was darken the image a little and then bring out the colors of the sunset in the background. Usually the colors and vividness of sunsets do not look anywhere near as great without editting.

In my camera bag

In my bag I usually carry some lens wipes that are pre-wetted so I don't have to carry a solution with me as I go out and photograph. I also carry a lens hood, an intervalometer, and a few empty sd cards.

Feedback

A good way that I found out how to take silhouettes is to have a bright background and a dark foreground so one can get a nice distinction between the foreground and background and successfully take a silhouette of the subject.
