Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a trip to Iceland.

Time

It was taken midday with a strong overcast that let me really slow down the shutter speed to enhance blur.

Lighting

Since there was such an overcast, the light that was cast was very minimal. It really allowed me to highlight the birds and blur of the waterfall.

Equipment

I shot this handheld with a Nikon D7100 and an 18-140mm 3.5g lens.

Inspiration

I really wanted to learn an understand shutter speed. Having all of the moving water around me in Iceland allowed me to practice this technique and improve my use of my cameras features. I was so impressed with how my D7100 handled the tweaks that I decided to step up to a full frame camera after this trip.

Editing

I try to use my camera to get the right shot at the right time using all of the right settings. I don't like to rely on post processing because I feel it makes you a lazy photographer.

In my camera bag

I normally go out with my Nikon D750 and one of two lenses depending on what I'm shooting: 35/50 for doing portraits of family and friends or a nice zoom like the 14-24 or 24-70 for landscapes and scenery.

Feedback

Light and shutter speed are key! Also, neutral density filters when the light is just too strong to what you are trying to accomplish!
