Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE.

Time

About 3 pm

Lighting

Natural outdoor light

Equipment

This photo was taken with a simple Kodak point and shoot camera. No flash or tripod. Although it helps to have an expensive camera, you can still get great shots with a simple camera.

Inspiration

I was at the zoo with my family. This tiger was in the outdoor exhibit and was sitting proudly on the rock. He is so proud.

Editing

The post-processing was very minimal. I just adjusted the saturation and vibrance a tiny bit. To make the color pop a little more.

In my camera bag

My equipment in my bag is very light. I have my Sony A3000 DSLR and a 50mm 1.8 a 55-210mm 4.0 zoom and a 18-55mm 3.5. Depending on what I am planning on shooting, I might also have a tripod and a remote trigger. I also ALWAYS have extra batteries and at least one extra SD card even if the SD card is a small one. I can't count the number of times I have gone somewhere with my camera only to find out I left the SD card in my computer at home. The second SD card may not be as big but at least I can still shoot some pictures. You also never know when your SD card may fail or corrupt.

Feedback

Be patient. I cannot count the number of times that I had a hard time getting the shot I want without getting people in the way. If you wait, it will clear for a bit and you will have better luck. If you are taking kids with you to the zoo, bring another adult who can help with the kids while you are taking pictures. That way you can take your time and if they get board you can move on. Get to know the zoo, if possible. Talk to the zoo keeper and see when the animals are the most active. I can't count the many times I have come to the zoo and the animals are sleeping. Sometimes it is the weather, or it could be as simple as the time of day. Also find out when the zoo is the busiest and if possible avoid that time.
