I've always taken a fascination in water based photography and after seeing the falls in a brochure I put it as a top priority while I was in Canada. I took about half an hour just to take this and a few other photos as I like to take my time being a perfectionist at heart. The smoky-silky affect as well as the iron based rock work I saw in other photographs of this fall inspired me to see if I could capture this stunning scene.

Tangle falls (Canada)Time
This shot was taken at midday which is possibly the worst time to take water fall photography due to the reflection off the water and the bright sky compared to the darker landscape. I took several photos from different angles and shutter speeds and finally got the perfect shot to create the smoky/silky water affect.Lighting
As with any long shutter exposure, lighting of the sky and white water prove very difficult when the sun's at its brightest. A 10 stop nd filter was used to reduce light levels to workable amounts I also included as little of the sky as possible and the water was post processed to reduce highlights.Equipment
As much as I hate using a tripod due to the weight and the faff putting them up I try and always use them for landscapes for stability and image quality. I also used a 10 stop nd filter as without this the image would be far too bright at two seconds and f8. I used a nikon 16-35 for an ultra wide angle perspective.Inspiration

I try to minimise the amount of post processing as I feel this distracts from the reality of the landscape. I used Lightroom to reduce the highlights in the water and played a little with the saturation/vibrancy to highlight the iron in the rocks. In my camera bag
Far too much, I feel like I'm carrying round a small child in my ruck sack. I have a Nikon 800, 16-35mm 70-300mm (recently updated to the 80-400mm) 105mm macro and 10 stop ND filter Oh and a cheap tripod. I like to save up for the best equipment I can afford as I try and use my camera every day.Feedback
Take time with landscapes they're not moving anywhere fast so it's easy to review and adjust as you go along. Try taking multiple exposure and different shutter speeds and angles to get the affect you're looking for. The best time to take water falls in my experience is in slight cloud and with no wind. As above I hate using my tripod but without it certain photos like this just wouldn't be possible. I also use an inexpensive tripod as I then don't worry about putting it the water, sand or sea. Water falls are a lot easier with ND filters so definitely an investment worth taking.
