Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Santa Barbara, CA when I was still a student in 2009. It was in the studio.

Time

This was taken in the studio very late night. The model Albina Bekova and I have been friends for a long time and have worked together many times. This was one of my first nude sessions with her and it just fell together nicely.

Lighting

I was playing with lighting as I was a student then. I borrowed an octobank from a friend and had my canon speedlight on the opposite side with a blue filter if I remember correctly. I love the Octobank soft lighting. I really focused on the dimples in her lower back to try and at least make those come out just so slightly.

Equipment

I shoot with Canon and I believe at the time it was the Canon 5D mark i. The Octobank and I were tethered with pocket wizards and I believe I had a "peanut" on my speedlight.

Inspiration

I was playing with light and was always interested in doing nudes and Albina and I were friends. She was starting out modeling at the time and trusted me so it went from there. We became better friends and have done many shoots since then.

Editing

The post all took place in photoshop. Mostly curves and saturation.

In my camera bag

Wow. My bag is full of lots of things. Lenses and 2 camera bodies. Flashes and flash lights. I shoot photo and video so I have various tools in my bag. I always carry advil and sinus medication. I travel quite a bit so you never know what you are going to need.

Feedback

Practice practice. I love dark studios. It is complete control and shows your mistakes much more strongly. So screw up as much as possible so you can learn.
