Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at home, in my front yard. I don't exactly work in a studio setup, so almost all of my photos are taken in what I would call a natural environment.

Time

It was around four or five in the evening. I find that this time of the day offers wonderful lighting to work with. There are absolutely no sharp shadows, and the natural light is bright enough to capture the colors in all vibrancy.

Lighting

No artificial lights were used to take this photo, just the light of a slightly overcast sky on a late spring evening!

Equipment

I remember this being on of those photos you take mindlessly and somehow they turn out to be quite pleasing to the eye. I only used my Sony DSC-HX400V to take this photo, with no tripod or external flash.

Inspiration

We had just bough these potted plants with lots of different flowers. They only show up in spring time, for about a month in my home to. So, I just wanted to capture them while I had the chance.

Editing

I have adjusted the white balance and contrast in photoshop, just so the colors look more lifelike and to counter the slight dullness due to the overcast sky.

In my camera bag

If I am using my Sony DSC-HX400V, then it's just the camera itself, the charger, some spare SD cards, and a small, portable tripod. When I take my SLT Sony A58 out, I like to also add a couple of lenses that I am comfortable with. My favorites are the 35mm macro lense and the versatile kit lense.

Feedback

To me, this photo is a reminder that sometimes, you don't need a new, unique or interesting subject or an expensive camera. A good photo is more than that. It has a lot to do with how you choose to capture the subject. Pick a simple subject, anything that you find lying around works. Try different angles, lighting techniques or even lenses and other equipment. Just play around and experiment and see how changing a factor by the smallest amount can have a huge difference on the outcome.
