Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West, Western Cape, South Africa. It is a nature reserve just on the outskirts of the town. We walk, have picnics and attend local music concerts at the foot of the mountain. There are a few trails up the mountain ranging from a short and easy to strenuous but always good for the soul.

Time

I cannot remember what time the shot was taken but it looks like about 4-5 o'çlock in the afternoon in July five years ago. July is our winter and rainfall season.

Lighting

Five years ago I was not really aware of anything technical. I love taking photo's and the "moment" speaks to me. It is a question of being aware and loving the moment and letting the situation speak to your senses.

Equipment

It was my first "big"camera - Canon SX40 HS - I notice that I had a wide angle lens on - Digital Advance HD. High Definition DSLR Pro MC AF Digital Wide Converter w/Macro 0.48x 58mm Japan Optics. I also know that I could never figure out how to use this lens - trying it out but never mastering it.

Inspiration

I love hiking and being in nature and always carry a camera with me. It was at a stage just after a read about lowering your camera when taking the photo and I had to do this to fit in the dam as well as the mountain. Afternoon and morning sun is always special.

Editing

This was at a stage when I did not have the software or knowledge to edit anything.

In my camera bag

I throw either my Canon SX60 (now) in my bag or if I actually set out on a photo expedition I will take the Canon EOS 750 D as well. As I have mentioned I do moments and swapping lenses and cameras just do not work for me.

Feedback

Morning and early evenings have great light. My only advice is to be aware and appreciative of nature. You can always find a moment or a photo opportunity that will speak to you. Any other time of day should not deter you to take photo's on the go.
