Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my college, during my first year of studying Photography. This was actually taken during my first time in the Studio.

Time

This was late afternoon into early evening, I remember gathering ideas from various sources to produce an idea of my aims. I researched Mario Testino and was inspired by his work which led to this image.

Lighting

I wanted my image from this project to be captivating, particularly this image. Because my theme was 'African Fashion' I wanted that to stand out and truly show African beauty and fashion at its finest. So I used backlighting as well as positioning another lighting to her side to create a dramatic look, making her look fierce and proud of her culture because that it what the project is about at the end of the day.

Equipment

For this used, like I said it was my first time in the studio and it was taken about 3 months after I started photography, so I was a beginner. I used a Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm lens, no flash. But I did use about 3 studio lighting but in this, only 2. In addition, I used a reflector and a black background a black velvet cloth to give it a nice dark effect).

Inspiration

As i mentioned before Mario Testino inspired my outcome. But initially i can about this idea of shooting African Fashion because i am into fashion and art and fell in love with the whole idea of Fashion Photography but at the same time i wanted something different and unique. I wanted to produce a project that will differentiate from others. So as an African myself I felt African Fashion was perfect as at the time i felt people regard African fashion as traditional and not trendy and i wanted to disprove this by taking images to express the true beauty of African Fashion and how it can be worn as a high street fashion piece.

Editing

For me, I do not like to edit my images a lot but in this case I increased the brightness and contrast as I felt that was all it needed to finish it off.

In my camera bag

I have recently bought a Canon, so now when I go on shoots I was pack my Canon 700D, 18-55mm lens, 50mm lens, a tripod and that basically it for now. As an amatuer photography and Business student i am limited to what i can purchase now but in the near future i do hope to invest in more advanced equipment to improve the quality of my photographs but for the minute I am focusing on improving my photography skills.

Feedback

erm Advice?.....I would say if you are capturing images in the studio definitely don't plan your shots to the dot, experiment using different equipment and also MOVE! Try to change the position of the lightning when its in one direction, moved further in or out, the smallest change can make a huge difference. In addition, take shot even when the model is not 'posing', catch them in their comfort zone.
