Behind The Lens

Location

Taken on a walk along the Norfolk Coast Path from Morston Quay towards Blakeney, on the North Norfolk Coast, this is one of the myriad of tidal channels within Morston Salt Marshes.

Time

Having spent the day exploring the coastline hereabouts, the decision to stop at Morston for a late afternoon walk was one of those 'off the cuff' moments - no planning, just a need to get out and feel a sea breeze.

Lighting

The light was flat, but that at least meant that the water highlights on the wet mud did not burn out.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon EOS 5D, with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Shot handheld, with IS enabled, at 1/60th, F4 ISO100. Spot metered from the grass on either bank - I'm old fashioned like that!

Inspiration

Leading lines and a flat horizon - a barren landscape that needs a suitably derelict subject as the focal point. I love the sense of solitude and peace that the Norfolk coast brings to me, this translates through the lens.

Editing

Obviously converted to B&W, I use Silver Efex Pro for all my B&W processing. I would have used a green filter, a boost in contrast and a touch of film grain. Shot at F4 and focussed on the derelict boat, depth of field was limited (as I intended), but I enhanced this slightly by the use of lens blur in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Normally a full arsenal of Canon gear! EOS 5D, EOS D30 as a back up (or for wet use), EF 24-105L, Sigma 12-24, Sigma 135-400 and a Tamron 90mm Macro, with Speedlites, Lee ND filters, cable release, spirit level etc. When walking, I normally prefer to take a Canon EOS-M, usually with the 11-22mm.

Feedback

Look for strong lines within the landscape, or within the urban environment, then make sure there is a subject, or point of focus. The most important advice is to keep your eyes open and take plenty of pictures - it is only with practice and experimentation that you will be able to develop your photographic eye and your own style...
