Behind The Lens

Location

Queen Victoria kent street bus stop.Sydney Australia.

Time

This was taken as the last wave of rush hour workers were making there way home to the North side.approximately 6pm.

Lighting

Sydney has harsh lighting all year round and cityscapes are difficult with so much glare bouncing off glass. It had just rained so I knew it would be an optimal time especially considering the sun had not yet set and the street/city scape lights were not yet on.For my it's an ideal time to be out, I love the subdued warmth and the different sort of drama this can create for your image. The lack of harsh contrasts and shadows even in the wet reflective conditions is magical for me.lets you wander about the image,so interpreting the connections and meanings are more user friendly instead of being pulled around by the light and shadows.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 6D with the 24-105m f4 L series kit lense.the filter is a CP slim UV and hood. This was handheld no flash in manual mode.My prefered way to fly.

Inspiration

I was hunting about the city in my street photographer mode looking for interesting angles. I had been out there a while and had just stopped in the QVB to scope it out on my way to the camera store for my usual window gazing as I the city was getting empty. As I exited on to the street I was about to cross the road when I noticed a reflection in the window of all the people beside me standing at the bus stop. Then I noticed the uniformity of the composition and that great line that I was standing on the other side of.I couldn't help myself.I didn't think that much into it other than it was ironic and humorous from my perspective, I wasn't on that gravy train was a me and them moment.

Editing

At this time I was only a few months into having my first DSLR, having trained exclusively in 35m film using dark rooms and processing myself and only in black and white, post processing and in colour on a computer using lightroom (that I had never heard of) was baffling and way too complex.I had shot this in black and white and hit the colour converter button and loved the outcome. That's the extent of my technical savvy a year ago. However I do remember having a lighting issue on the corner bottom my side, as the awning of the building above was throwing that deep dark shadow, which was creating a strange bounce between the line of people and the rest of the image, I guess because of the extreme diagonal? the lightroom slider control for vignette balanced the problem.

In my camera bag

Well my wallet and keys then as I only had the 6D with kit lense. However now I always have my trusty Canon kit 24-105m F4 my new wide Sigma for full frame 12-24m f4.5 rectingulated and because I just never can tell where I shall end up I pop my Canon 85m f1.8 in.It's a fantastic lense. I always have 2 spare batteries, camera rain coat, puffer and a cleaning pen and cloths.I also carry a set of ND filters for the kit lense.

Feedback

Well its a game of hide and seek really.Street photography is all about that chance encounter. Its not a good idea to go out with the idea of capturing anything. You need to be open in mind and action.Take chances have a go and more importantly just "be out there".The less conspicous and unicombered with gear you are,the better placed you are to blend in and "see".I have my canon strap wrapped around my wrist with Canon in right hand and lense cradled by the left.My tiny back pack that holds water keys a phone and a wallet when Im in street photographer mode. Own your space and action but always respect the fact some people will take offense or perform if they see you and don't buy your action, which could potentially ruin your image and confidence.Nothing like being abused by the street crazy for targeting him for government purposes especially if you hadn't even seen him and now he's yelling at you in tow!.Beware the streets have an etiquette unique to each moment.Being observant is only half the story, the rest is confidence and plain determination.
