This is a self portrait I took in Nunavut, Canda. It was -40 degrees celcius that day, without windchill. I was standing on my front porch, about to go back inside after a ten minute walk to shoot some photos, when I decided to take a picture to show the frost development on my eyelashes. I'm really happy with how it turned out!Time
This photo was taken at 10 am on February 22 right in the peak of winter. Most days were around - 40 degrees celcius you expect to be covered in frost after any exposure.Lighting
Most communities in Nunavut are in total darkness for the winter months. Our little hamlet, Naujaat, was right on the Arctic Circle, meaning we recieved about an hour of daylight each day. This photo was shot at 10 am, which would have been around sunrise for February.Equipment
The camera used in this image was a Panasonic Lumix, no other equipment was used.Inspiration
This photo turned out to be a bit of a fluke. I could feel the frost building on my eyelashes while out on a photography walk. I decided to snap a self portrait to show my friends and family what it was like to be outside in -40 degree Celsius weather, then ended up loving the photo!Editing
Minimal post-processing on this image. Played around with the highlights, contrast, and shadows to get the colours to pop a little more, using Photoshop Elements. In my camera bag
My Camera bag always has my Canon Eos Rebel 2ti, with a portrait lens, 55 mm lens, and a 300 mm lens, as well as a small point and shoot camera. This time it was the Panasonic Lumix, but I also carry a Fuji Finepix sometimes. I like to bring a small homemade bean bag to prop my camera on the ground.Feedback
A friend and fellow photographer once told me "to take 100's of photos - but only keep the best!", this is still the most fantastic advice anyone has told me about photography. Shoot everything, the more the better, all the angles, something will work!
