Wow nice job with the D60, capturing that shadow/highlight range.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Loch Ashie, a water reservoir near Inverness. Don't tell anyone, but she had a quick dip!

Time

This would have been around 3pm, with the sun high in sky (hence the dip). We had been out on a walk with her 'brother' and best canine pal.

Lighting

The light was a bit tricky as it was bright sun light, but I find it often really brings out the coat in brindle dogs.

Equipment

It was my trusty old Nikon D60 (still works too!) and a 18-55 kit lens. Like they say, the best camera is the one you have with you!

Inspiration

Kalli herself. I adore my dogs, they are what drives me to constantly better myself.

Editing

Yes, I upped the clarity and added a vignette to draw the attention to the subject.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I carry my D5100, 35mm 1.8 prime lens, a 10stop ND filter, a flash and a little softbox plus a remote shutter release and a wee tripod.

Feedback

With dogs its all about them not being scared of the camera. The 'big black thing' in front of your face prevents them from seeing your facial expression, so if you are photographing a dog close up, its often a good idea to try and use the live view. In addition, I love candid shots like this, when you just let them have fun and follow them around, preferably on their level, to get the best results.
