Location
This photo was taken during my 2015 trip to Maui at the Seven Sacred Pools on the Road to Hana in Maui, Hawaii. It was a beautiful place and I've never seen water bluer than in Maui.Time
My family and I had driven all day to get to the city of Hana, a remote town only accessible by a long winding road. The city itself was gorgeous, but on the return trip, we chose to take the long way back around the rest of the island. We stopped at the Seven Sacred Pools in the late afternoon, around 2 PM, and took a dip in the water of the pools.Lighting
The lighting is all natural - no additional sources besides the sun.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikkon D3300 with a 55mm lens.Inspiration
I love the ocean and I am a true beach lover. I really wanted to get some shots of the waves breaking and the browns and oranges of the rocks provided great contrast to the magnificent blue of the Hawaiian water.Editing
I may have used the auto-enhance feature on my computer to slightly improve the contrast of the photo, however, I uploaded the photo a while ago, so I am unsure of any editing that I may have done. I am very new to post-processing and enhancements, so my techniques are not all that advanced. In my camera bag
My Nikkon D3300 is actually my first and only DSLR; I took a photography class in school and got hooked. I ended up getting the DSLR as a gift. Generally I have the D3300 and my 55mm lens, but I also recently got lens attachments for my iPhone, which I now bring everywhere. Occasionally I'll bring along a tripod, but when travelling to places such as Hawaii, I like to travel light.Feedback
Finding areas with good contrast between the foreground and background always makes my pictures pop. To capture the breaking wave, I used the fastest shutter speed my camera has and took a burst of photos. I probably have about 20 versions of this picture, but if you have a lot of options to chose from, the final product will be the best it can be. When taking photos of the ocean, it is also important to ensure that the edge of the ocean on the horizon is completely straight so that the picture is visually appealing.
