Behind The Lens

Location

My friend was hanging out in the garden with my tomato plants. He, She was comfortable with having a home that attracted flying insects. It is very small, by the way. It was great that there wasn't a disturbing background but I was shooting so tight that the background just was out of the photograph.

Time

The spider hung out there most of the day. It wasn't a problem photographing it as it did not move very much. All I had to do is try different times of the day. This was taken in the late morning before the sun was too high in the sky.

Lighting

No reflectors just good morning sun light.

Equipment

On this setup I used my Canon 6d on a tripod. I used my 100mm Macro, my favorite close up lens.

Inspiration

I have been watching these guys for quite some time. They are so small, it just seemed like a great opportunity to see what I could do. I have several in the yard but this one just seemed to in a great position to take some photos. I have not been very proactive on macro photography but this sure inspired me to do more.

Editing

I seldom do very much post processing but on this one I did add some clarity and dynamic contrast. I wanted to bring out the color and I was fascinated with the hair (?) on the face.

In my camera bag

Well my bag is for things that make my camera get the shots. The destination is critical in deciding what I will carry. My camera is seldom in the bag as you can loose more photos trying to get your camera out. It is almost always traveling with the 24 - 105 attached. I do a lot of landscape so I will have my wide angle (17-40) and I always travel with my 70 - 200 close by. My favorite accessory is the belt quick lens changer from Peak Design. I carry lots of stuff in a second bag but that is there incase I think I will need something when I get to where I am going to photograph. I am not a complicated photographer.

Feedback

Well the most important piece of equipment is the lens in my eye. Constantly look for the perfect photo for the moment then when you capture it look at it again several times when you get home. Often I will look at a photo and wonder what I saw but it eventually comes through to the brain. Capturing this little one took time because I did not want to disturb it, as then I would have to wait for it to come back. I also wanted to photograph it from both sides and the other direction was much more complicated. I actually set my camera up and viewed it on my phone using the WIFI ability. This one turned out to be the better photo.
