Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my room with a make-shift "studio" using a glass bottle of water and an LED light.

Time

I had just discovered light painting, and this is one of my first good photographs. I read all about the process and decided to experiment with translucent things and coloured lights. I stayed up until 1 am trying to get the perfect shot.

Lighting

This was the first time I had experimented with light painting. Trying out different textures and colours. I did no color correction, it was just the blue sheet underneath, the blue tint of the water bottle and the blue LED light that made this picture what it is now.

Equipment

I used my rebel Canon with a tripod. The exposure was about 5-6 seconds in BULB mode, without the use of external lighting (apart from the LED light)

Inspiration

This was the first time I was really excited about taking new kinds of images, so to try out something that looked cool and fun, I decided to read more about light painting.

Editing

No post processing, just the materials I used were all coordinated perfectly to get the vibrant colours and textures that the picture has.

In my camera bag

My camera bag includes: My Canon rebel t3i body, an 18-55mm lens, a 55-250mm lens, extra battery, multiple empty SD cards (just in case), Zeiss wipes to clean my lenses as well as a light meter. Sometimes I might include a color checker card, but that's only for un-improvised works.

Feedback

The key to getting a great light painting shot is to experiment. I tried out this image about 10 times before i got this result. If it doesn't work, keep trying. If you feel that you don't like it, then change it! After all, this is your photograph and your experiment. It is yours to do whatever you want with it. And variety is also important. It is really easy to copy someone else's work. If you don't do what comes from your mind, it will be difficult for you to grow as an artist. Do whatever your mind tells you to do.
