Location
The photo is taken on the west coast of Skye, Scotland. I spent three days on the island with a long list of places I wanted to visit. The weather was glorious sunshine which is unusual for that part of the world and not the best for landscape photographs but sometimes you land lucky.Time
This was my last location of the day. I had never been to the lighthouse before although had seen other's photos of it. I was lucky enough to arrive at that 'magic hour', had a quick walk about and decided on my viewpoint.Lighting
The light was just right with a setting sun to the west shining on the side of the cliffs and the lighthouse.Equipment
I used my Canon 40D and Canon 17 - 40mm f4L mounted on a Manfrotto 190 XPROB with a 322RC2 grip ball head and a remote trigger.Inspiration
I was only on Sky for three days and this was one of the locations I wanted to visit having seen photos that other people had taken.Editing
The photo was taken in RAW and I used Lightroom to process it. I boosted the saturation slightly to bring out the warmth of the sunset and used a graduating filter on a diagonal from the top left of the picture to bring out the detail in the cloud and the blue of the sky. I slightly sharpened the lighthouse to make it pop out of the picture and cropped it allowing the lighthouse to be on a 'rule of thirds' line and the path to start in the lower left corner to lead the eye into the photo and towards the subject. In my camera bag
Canon 40D, Canon 30D as spare / second body depending on what i'm doing. Canon 17-40f4L, 70-200f4L, 100mm f2.8 macro, 50mm f1.8. Manfrotto 190 XPROB tripod with a 322RC2 grip ball head. Spare batteries, remote shutter release, lens cloth and brushes to remove dust, large plastic survival bag which is great for kneeling or lying on whilst framing a shot. Pen and notepad just incase! Any of the small paper bags of Silica Gell that is included in products when you buy them, shoes, bags etc. to remove any moisture from my bag whilst out and about. The leg cut of an old pair of waterproof trousers which I use as a cover for my camera and lens depending on conditions.Feedback
The viewpoint for this location was past the start of the footpath that lead to the lighthouse. Whilst most visitors were heading out on the main path I walked past this and along the cliff line a short distance until the view opened out. Although having never been to this location my visit was made easier by checking google maps and getting a feel for the lay of the land before I arrived. I got lucky with the sunset and lighting but I am now aware that there are apps and websites that you can use to if you want to plan precisely when the sun is setting and which direction the light is going to be shining.
