Behind The Lens

Location

On vacation in Pompano Beach, Florida, we had an oceanview room for our last 3 days. I thought it would be fun to great the dawn with the camera even though I'm not a morning person.

Time

This was way too early! The sun had just poked above the unusually calm Atlantic Ocean and the colours were amazing. It was worth getting up even though I was on vacation.

Lighting

I was concerned with how the sun itself would overwhelm the colour and texture of the scene, so I aimed north to keep it from being directly in the shot.

Equipment

I used a Canon T3i and used the railing of the balcony to stabilize the shot.

Inspiration

I just love wide expanses of colour, and this fit the bill. I also like that this shot has no activity other than the mild churning of the morning waves.

Editing

I was just learning about post-processing at the time, so I didn't do much - just a little bit of balancing to try and bring the shadows up a bit and popping the colours some.

In my camera bag

Not much at this time, just the camera and its standard lens with a 50 mm fixed lens. I've since added more (and switched to a Canon SL2) but it was pretty basic then.

Feedback

If you've got a view of the Atlantic along the eastern US or Canadian border then you need to get up early and watch for this. I suppose an eastern view over any large body of water would be great. Look for a calm day so the water isn't moving too much. This part of the coast has great sand beaches, but other topography would work well. Just aim north or south of the sun to keep the colours from washing out and look for stretches of the coast with little or no traffic. Today, I would have a split nd filter to allow a little more of the lower-left detail in. Or find a way to pull it up more in post.
