Behind The Lens

Location

London

Time

Uhhh probably coming up to late afternoon

Lighting

Shadows make for some fantastic dramatic scenes and I usually go heavy towards shadow or colours. I try to emphasise certain points as much as I can. Here I think the sun was a little too bright in the sky which is one of the reasons I wanted it to look less like a picture and more like an illustration.

Equipment

I actually just used my phone it was a Nokia Lumia 1020 at the time I think.

Inspiration

I love how the curve of the building fits the street, it was so interesting to me. The buildings as well are just astonishingly beautiful and when you view it from this angle you really want to wonder down and just see where the winding path leads.

Editing

I always edit my pictures afterwards but I usually just play around with the shadows and colours. I try to make a lot of my work look like pieces of art (like paintings or illustrations) just to see what happens when you change the forms, shapes and colours. I like playing around with stuff. In this case I wanted to make it look like something out of a comic so I used a few filters on top of one another and then played around with the contrast and colours.

In my camera bag

I really can't afford any big flashy equipment to be honest. At the moment I'm just a student studying illustration in London so I usually just have my phone and take pictures for fun. If I'm going somewhere to specifically take some pictures though I'll take my cannon 1100D (greaaaat camera) and my new tripod.

Feedback

It depends, I don't usually worry too much about all the technical stuff and to be honest I don't know much about it. If I see something beautiful I try to capture it in a way that shows the viewer what I was seeing. I try to bring across what makes it special. Some times I'll edit them afterwards and try to emphasise a particular point, for example if it's a sunset I'll enhance the colours because to me they look like paintings in the sky and I want to bring that across. So just try and emphasise what you are seeing and the WAY you are seeing it. Play around with your tools and editing software (or even just the filters on your phone!!) Don't be afraid to try new things.
