Behind The Lens

Location

Wainuiomata, Wellington, New Zealand

Time

Middle of the day in the peak of Summer

Lighting

Natural light from midday summer sun

Equipment

This was taken from a very basic digital camera, hand held and on burst mode. In the middle of a game of tag with the pony featured.

Inspiration

The pure joy of the moment was something that I wanted to capture forever.

Editing

Simple crop and slight contrast changes on photoshop. No other changes.

In my camera bag

I'm usually seen with my digital camera simply clipped to my belt loop or stuffed in my pocket. My photos are always taken in the heat of the moment, and often I am not near my truck or any other place to store equipment. I never plan my photographs ahead of time. Horses don't work like that, so why photograph a fake scenario? I'm not trying to create photography, I'm trying to capture the magic. I have recently purchased a new digital camera, but the important features of my new Olympus Tough are the dust proof, shock proof, waterproof and Sarah Thrasher proof qualities, I am excited to see the moments I am yet to photograph.

Feedback

Keep your camera with you all the time. Learn from every single photo you take. Why do you love it? Why is it not as good as you hoped? What does it reveal that you didn't see when you took it? Try to get as many photos as you can, and take the time to critique every single photo. Use your camera as a sketchbook and a diary. Let the photographs tell the story and look for the magic hidden in the mundane.
