Very clever! I first thought it was a fiery explosion :)

Behind The Lens

Location

It was a spontaneous project that came out of nowhere. Backlighting vegetables with an old lamp from the basement, and staring, fascinated by the strange patterns that came through. This cauliflower seemed to impersonate an explosion or, as my young and imaginative brother pointed out, a giant inflated pizza. This photo was taken in the lounge of my family home with a variety of vegetables scattered in a strange circle around us.

Time

It was in the midst of a lazy Sunday afternoon at home. It was a more or less average day for our family, and time seems to fly when your carrying out a project.

Lighting

The aim for this photograph was for people to go "what is this?!" and let their imagination wander. To execute this properly, the entire setting had to be extremely dark, which is much easier said than done. The backlight coming up from under the cauliflower was a whiter light rather than a yellow light, and also an extremely bright one. I covered half of the lamp with paper to create the ombré of black to whitish blue in the background.

Equipment

I will admit that good equipment matters. But I will also argue that a great photographer can make a great photograph with even the worst equipment. This was taken on my brothers handheld Sony camera, as my SLR was in repairs. No other lighting or steadying equipment was used to make this photograph.

Inspiration

A rainy day and a variety of beautiful backlit pears by a photographer I am unsure of the name of.

Editing

no editing was done whatsoever!

In my camera bag

I always carry around my Canon T5 and 18-55mm lense, simple and effective. I occasionally bring along my 75-300mm lense which, although having had some bad reviews, is extremely helpful. I generally try not to carry around too much but also have my 50mm lense with me when photographing in the streets.

Feedback

Be creative, and don't be afraid to try a variety of fruits and vegetables, or even household objects. Don't be downhearted by failure at first, finding the right subject is the hardest part and requires a lot of trial and error.
