In ancient times it was called Therasia (Θηρασία), then Hiera (Ἱερά), because sacred to the god Vulcan, from where its current name.
Located 20 km north of Sicily (Gulf of Patti, Tyrrhenian Sea). The Strait of Vulcan, a stretch of sea off 750 meters or so, separate it from Lipari.
