Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui, Hawaii; just behind the parking lot of the Sunrise Cafe.Time
Taken just before 1:00PM.Lighting
The lighting was a bit of a challenge as the man was sitting in a spot where he was half in shadow and half bright sunlight. So I set the camera to expose for the water behind him and expected that Lightroom would be able to recover the shadows.Equipment
Camera is Nikon D5100, lens Nikor 18-200 mm, handheldInspiration
There were a handful of homeless in the small park and the idea of homelessness in paradise struck me as so strange. Then I spotted this fellow and his total absorption in his reading of the clearly much used Bible.Editing
Lightroom was able to recover the shadows and prevent the highlights from popping. No need for sharping but I did ramp up the Clarity a bit to give the text of the Bible more pop. The original shot was much wider, taken at 95mm. On the advise of a more experienced photographer I cropped tightly and used the retouching brush to obscure his face just enough to preserve anonymity without losing his humanity. In my camera bag
I now work with a Nikon D5300 and a Sigma 18-300 mm lens which pretty much covers all situations while traveling. I also carry a light weight travel tripod and a set of ND filters for effects.Feedback
I always look for images that impact me in some way, humor, beauty, symmetry, complexity or, as in this photo, a situation that holds a clear but unspoken message, home is not a place, it's a state of mind.
