Behind The Lens
Location
This was shot on my living room couch. I had always been a fan of film photography and was skeptic to transition into digital. Putting my nikon f55 aside, I did a few test shots with one of my favourite subjects on a digital camera. The results made me love digital shooting more and more everyday!Time
This was taken in the evening, with tungsten lighting from the living room. My long haired cat had taken his first haircut, and he was not very happy about his new short hair. I seen him moping on the couch, and I thought I might be able to cheer him up with a few shots. He loves the camera. His eyes lit up when I pointed it in his direction.Lighting
The living room was lit enough for the evening. I didn't place the lights anywhere in particular. I was pretty lucky he was sitting in good lighting.Equipment
My first digital camera (and still my main equipment) is a nikon d90. I had bought the 50 mm lens to go with the body. I highly recommend this lens for portraits like these. With a narrow f stop, you get beautiful blur around your subject and are able to choose a focal point.Inspiration
I wanted to practise with digital photography and prove to myself that I can get just as stunning effects in digital photos as film. Aside from wanting to cheer this little guy up from a bad hair day, my goal was to get use to this fixed lens. I had taken photos with a zoom lens on my nikon f55. With a little back and forth adjusting and risking looking like an ungraceful dancer in front of my cat, I got the hang of the 50 mm lens.Editing
Just a slight white balance touch up in photoshop, and I enhanced the effect of the blur I created through the camera around the head of my cat.In my camera bag
Nikon d90, 50 mm lens and a battery charger. Just an occasional hobby!Feedback
Avoid flash. I am not a fan of flash at all but I know some who can capture beautiful images with it. I like to go towards natural lighting. Know your camera settings well (I am still learning), and keep the camera on manual settings so you have full control over your image. I tend to keep my ISO around 200-400 indoors to avoid much grain, and try to keep my fstop as low as the light will allow me, without a tripod, to create the blur effect that works beautifully well in portraits.
