Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Mercer Park and Arboretum in Houston, Texas, It's a gorgeous park with a wooded area, gardens, a tea house by a lake and a bridge overlooking a lily pond. It's my absolute favorite place to shoot because of all of the versatility in the scenery.

Time

This was taken around 9:30 am.

Lighting

I really wanted to capture some sun flare and warmth illuminating her from behind and I finally was able to find the perfect spot to have just the right amount filter in.

Equipment

Nikon D300S, Nikon 85mm 1.4, natural light

Inspiration

This was an extra special birthday shoot because it was actually two sisters that share a same birthday. Big sis wasn't in this shot but it was such a hoot because they were both the picture of perfection in their gorgeous princess costumes. This was one of my favorite shoots because it really captured these little girls in this gorgeous place with this beautiful warm light and just made it turn out so magical and whimsical.

Editing

Yes, I used TRA action Oh Snap and added a warm filter and sharpened just a bit and popped the color here and there.

In my camera bag

My workhorse is definitely my D3 with the super sharp and awesome 35mm 1.4. I also travel with myNikon D300s with the 85mm 1.4 for portraits like these, it's my go to for the tighter portrait shots. I also carry an SB900 in case I need fill flash and a reflector for my outdoor shoots. The wedding gear list, that's another story...lol...

Feedback

When shooting in the summertime, especially in a place where it's tremendously hot and humid like it is here in Houston, you must must must shoot children between 8-10 am or in the evening when it's cooled down a bit. They have extremely short tempers in the heat and even shorter attention spans. I usually carry my Ipad with me and load it with kid songs and clips to catch their attention. Sometimes, this doesn't work and you just have to let them be and follow them to catch those even more perfect natural shots like this one. Don't be afraid to get silly for the babies. They love it!
