Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my mother in laws garden after we had a rain shower. We were walking through the garden with my little boy looking at her plants and I noticed the water drops sitting on the frangipani. I also love frangipani flowers.

Time

This is one of my favourite images. It was taken mid morning after rain, and I really liked the way the waterdrops were sitting.

Lighting

I was lucky that the light wasn't too harsh and I didn't actually need to use a flash. I find that flash sometimes takes away from the details in flowers. I prefer to shoot with out it if I can when taking photos of flowers.

Equipment

This photo was shot on my Canon EOS 450D, No Flash, F8, 1/250. Hand held as I didn't have my tripod.

Inspiration

I love waterdrops and also frangipanis and also love photographing flowers, so this was a win win for me. I am lucky that my little boy is patient and helps me look for flowers and things in the garden that would be fun to photograph. He now has his own little camera and joins me.

Editing

Not a lot of post-processing was done with this photo, as I liked it the way it was. I resized it and checked the colours and that was about all.

In my camera bag

My camera bag used to have a lot of equipment in it, but I have downsized it now to just my favourite things. Canon 450D camera Remote control Spare battery (charged) Filters Lense 70mm - 250mm, 18mm-55mm Tripod (which I don't use a lot) Something or someone to help cast a shadow over things + A small panasonic Lumix And of course my iphone 6 ( Sometimes I find that the simple things can take just as good or sometime even better photos than the fancy equipement.)

Feedback

Flowers can be tricky to photograph and some people pick them and bring them inside to create a more controlled lighting. I prefer to photograph them still in their environment (this can be tricky, especially with wind). My tip is to be patient and if you don't get your shot the first time, try again later or the next day. Be prepaired to get a bit dirty, as you may have to lay down in the dirt to capture the small things and people may look at you weird but you will get a better shot and it will be worth it.
