Behind The Lens

Location

On vacation in Myrtle Beach SC.

Time

Early in the morning. Very early. Couldn't get my wife or kids out to go for a sun up walk.( It also happened to be freezing, you get the best rates for hotels during the off seasons.)

Lighting

I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time. You can't tell mother nature how to set up the lights.

Equipment

This was one of my first times using my DSLR Nikon D3200. For this I'm pretty sure I used the basic 55-200 mm lens that came with the pack. I didn't take my tripod with me. Used the natural light without a flash.

Inspiration

Walking the beaches in winter is great. Not to many people out walking, and especially this time in the morning. I've always like how classic a dock, pier or lighthouse looks when day takes over the night or vice versa. I wanted to catch that change as best I could. To this day I still think this is one of my best beach pictures.

Editing

Actually no. This is before I started making alterations to my photos. This pic is all natural.

In my camera bag

I ride my motorcycle to a lot of places I go, so I go light. Always take my Nikkor 35mm / Nikkor 55-300mm and my Nikkor 18-55mm with my trusty Nikon D3200. I also usually have some aftermarket cheap light panel or flash available. Since I'm not made of money and things do seem to fall out of my saddle bags / pockets

Feedback

Go in the off season. There are less people on the beach and the hotels are a lot cheaper. Scope out the area before that morning to get an idea what you want to do. And wake up in time for some coffee before hand. Make sure you know what sunrise is and what the tides will be, that would help as well.
