Behind The Lens

Location

This little lady was photographed in my studio in Colorado Springs. It’s a small space but big things come in small packages - as our lovely model has demonstrated with her big eyes and spunky attitude!

Time

We were able to get this model into the studio in the afternoon - right after her nap!

Lighting

Lighting is all important. And in my estimation, less is more. The most beautiful light comes from one light source - the sun. For this shot I used a very close key light and a small strip light behind the model to help separate her hair from the background.

Equipment

Nikon D3s, Paul C Buff Einstein lighting. Always a tripod. Always.

Inspiration

Inspiration - just look at those eyes! She is a real beauty with plenty of attitude that makes capturing shots like this both challenging and very rewarding.

Editing

Simple post processing in Photoshop. Color correction, removed some blemishes, and strengthened her eyes a bit with a boost in contrast.

In my camera bag

Light meter, camera, tripod, lens cleaning cloth, etc.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself when working with kids. If they respond the way you need with funny faces or noises, go for it. Do a silly dance. Pick your nose. Fart. Whatever it takes to make your model comfortable and responsive - go for it.
