This was taken just right outside my house, I love reflections and horses, so to be able to combine the two is amazing!Time
This was taken at my favorite time of day, sunset, during the golden hour. It's tricky to get that perfect golden hour lighting because it doesn't last near as long as you expect it to and goes by in a flash. This photo may not be the best representation of golden hour but I love the warm tones coming off of it. This was taken May 25, 2015 at 7:53 PM.Lighting
For this photo, I would've liked to use a bit more light on the horse, maybe light up the foreground a bit. But back then I really had no idea what I was doing or how to even work my camera in Manuel mode.Equipment
I took this with a Nikon D3100, and a Nikkor 18-55mm lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I took this photo because I was trying to get a shot of a horse in water, I tried it with at least 4 horses before I used this little mare. I like hers best because the golden tones in it match her color somewhat and it blends together nicely.Editing
All I did with this was crop out the person leading her through the water. And I enhanced the colors a bit. That was back before I had Lightroom, if I were to edit it now, I would straighten it, because it's obviously off balance. And i would just even out the colors more.In my camera bag
I have my Nikon D810, with my two lenses, a Nikkor 18-55mm and a Nikkor 55-300mm. I also carry at least 6 memory cards with me, and 2 batteries just in case. I also have a Hoya ND filter for my smaller lens. And I always have a tripod.Feedback
Patience is key when working with horses, I had her walk through that water back and forth probably 30 times before I finally felt like I had a good photo. She may not look best in this photo, her ears aren't forward, her head is down. You can pick out a bunch of negatives in this. But like I said earlier, that was a year ago when I didn't know any better. I've since then taken several photography classes and notice things now that I didn't before. For instance, the horizon of the picture is not lined up right. For anything you take pictures of, I think it always looks better to have your photo straight. Maybe for someone who wants to try and take a photo like this, I would suggest having people there to help you. Someone to walk the horse through the water and someone to make the horse look and be attentive. Now going through all this and seeing all the changes I would make has made me want to go out and make this photo 10 times better.
